Sam Patterson, MFA
Day Job
I teach grades 8-12 in the subject areas of literature, writing, algebra, and photography. In a good week, I’ll commute on my bike 3 out of 5 days for a total of 120 miles. So far, this is a better week than last. |
I Believe
I believe that good curriculum allows teachers to make informed choices based on the needs of their students. I know teachers do their best work when they feel they have something of real value to their students. Education should be an opening of possibilities, not merely a parade through hoops. On a good day this philosophy shows up in my classes. I think the “roots” of this is visible in work on did during my MFA in writing. |

My Trajectory |
| I am interested in becoming a literacy director/developer for a large rural district in northern California. I would like to be part of the literacy reform movement in California. The instruction of writing in high school needs to be reconsidered. Colleges and Universities have taught literature and writing in separate classes, and this is what high school students need. | |||
